From Air Force One (the President’s plane) to the new Freedom Tower in New York City, from the NFL and NBA uniforms to efforts to perfect nuclear fusion and even making diamonds in Dunbar, we will talk about Fayette County connections.

Description: On July 24, 2002, the Quecreek Mine inadvertently cut into the adjacent Harrison #2 mine releasing millions of gallons of water trapping nine miners working underground. Rescue efforts were immediately started by the mining company, PA DEP and MSHA. This presentation will discuss the decisions and actions that led to the successful rescue of the miners. It was a massive effort that took place over four days that demonstrated sound engineering, surveying, drilling, pumping, and a never quit attitude by all involved.

Let’s explore the story of who, what, when, where, why, and how the Keystone Shortway came to be, with consideration from rattlesnakes, Indian trails, high bridges, and the need to move mountains.

Description:

Jim walks us through the history of the Whiskey Rebellion while tasting the fine whiskey distilled at Liberty Pole Spirits. Jim will speak about how in 1791, Washington County, Pennsylvania, was a heavily wooded wilderness at the headwaters of the Ohio River.  Many Scotch-Irish veterans of the Revolutionary War had returned to the area and the rocky farms that they had established before the War.  Through the rugged ingenuity of the brave Colonists, one of the first American Industries was born. Whiskey.  The government of our new nation saw the opportunity, through the imposition of an excise tax on whiskey. They saw the tax as an imposition of an arrogant, out-of-touch, new government.

Heritage grain once again grows in the same soil they so dearly loved, and travels down the paved paths upon which they drove the whiskey-laden mule trains.
