Greetings From Your President
Shirley McLaren
Dear Fellow School Retirees:
I am writing this message out of concern for all
our retired public school employees. If we as an organization don't
work together for the good of all our membership, we are in danger
of losing any chance we may have of successfully addressing our various
concerns and needs.
Included in those concerns is the need to provide
service to our members, service to our community, and support for
public education. As an organization PASR strives to meet these concerns
for our members in many ways - by providing social activities, by
keeping members informed on issues of importance to senior citizens,
and by doing what we can to influence legislation that affects our
very way of life.
Locally we have almost 900 members in our Dauphin
County Chapter of PASR. There are, however, at least that many more
school retirees in our area who not members. Unfortunately, only a
small percentage of all these retirees are actually active supportive
members of our chapter. By support I mean what members can do
as individuals to enhance the work of our chapter in the form of expanded
membership, financial support, and the willingness to take on positions
of leadership.
Not the least of our concerns is the need for a cost
of living adjustment (COLA). Sadly, there are those who retired ten
or fifteen years ago who are already feeling the pinch and they are
the older retirees who need our help and support. Fortunately, our
state organization with help from all the local chapters (including
Dauphin County Chapter!) is working with our state legislators to
solve this problem.
Why not join us in this effort? If you are not a
member of our chapter, join. And if you are a member, become active
and involved . We've been waiting for you!
