Chapter President's Message

As we spring into May and June, the schedule of chapter activities intensifies. Our May 19 meeting will include the second reading of the proposed By-Laws Revision and the adoption of the same. The 2007 Convention Resolutions will be reviewed, and the 2008-2009 Budget Proposal will be voted on for adoption. Our Educational Grant will be announced, and the Lauretta Woodson Award will be presented to a deserving educator and support staff person from one of the Lehigh County schools. The SSMHF Committee will hold a card shower for special care members as well as lead a memorial service to honor the memory of those members who passed away since May 2007.

We look forward to your submission of the Community Service Survey. Plan to join us as the involved committee chairs and their faithful volunteers show us the fruits of their labors. Come and see volunteerism at its best and be prepared for a surprise or two!

Our special guest, harpist Sarajane Williams, will provide background music throughout the luncheon and the social time that follows. Ms. Williams maintains a studio in Macungie where she offers therapeutic sessions using her musical expertise. She has written several books and trains others in the art of healing through music.

Upcoming events include a state sponsored Post-Retirement Seminar for more recently retired persons in late May and a chapter volunteer picnic at the Allentown Rose Garden in June. If you are lucky enough to receive an invitation to either of these events, plan to attend. The first event, sponsored jointly by Lehigh Chapter and PASR, provides discussion on several topics of special interest to our most recent retirees. The second event offers good food, good fellowship, and lasting friendships to those who serve our members selflessly.
HAPPY SPRING!

Ruth Roeder

This is Lehigh County

Lehigh County is located in southeastern Pennsylvania in the area known as the Lehigh Valley, with the city of Allentown as its county seat. It is positioned in the corridor beween Philadelphia and New York City, with quick and easy access to both of these major metropolitan areas.

Lehigh County also has a thriving cultural scene, with stage theaters, art museum, amusment park with world-class coasters and water slides, premier bicycle racing track, game preserve, numerous historical sites, and lots of arts and music festivals.

Lehigh County neighbors the East Coast's major markets. Regular commuters realize the ultimate convenience of our central location and transportation options. The Lehigh Valley International Airport provides both commercial and private air facilitites. Lehigh Valley International Airport offers full-time customer service and non-stop flights to many U.S. cities. Our "super highway and railway" networks and strategic geographic locations help make these markets 100 percent accessible. One-third of the U.S. population lives within a comfortable one day's drive, and one-half of Canadian businesses are within 500 miles.

Our community is comprised of 347 square miles of rolling hills including over 11,000 acres of preserved farmland and a network of more than 17,000 acres of outdoor recreational parks that offer extensive leisure opportunities.

WHO WE ARE

Pension recipients. We are individuals who retired from the public schools in the Lehigh County area and who are receiving benefits from the Public School Employees’ Retirement System (PSERS). Many of us are still working, pursuing other career interests, and many of us are fully retired, enjoying the freedom to do as we please on a day-to-day basis.

All former school employees. We work together to promote the common interests and serve the common needs of all school retirees, regardless of positions held prior to retirement.

Servants. We are individuals who believe that it is better to serve than be served. We serve fellow retirees, our colleagues still working in the schools, and members of the general public through a wide variety of volunteer activities.

Reformers. We are a cohesive group actively committed to promoting positive change. We strive to advance the social and economic welfare of school retirees, improve our system of public education, and make our communities better places in which to live.
